I'm reading it for a third time now and it keeps getting better. But I guess that's the brilliance of writing the book as a kind of retrospective arrangement. I feel like Oxen is basically Joyce saying "Well, if I'm going to surrender as narrator, first let me demonstrate my complete mastery of the entire history of the English language just so you don't think it was a lack of skill that lead me to abandon control of the novel, and in fact it's the logical conclusion of the development of literature to give these characters the ultimate say."Īnyway, thanks for bearing with me. To me, Oxen is like Joyce the narrator's last stand before surrendering to the power of the characters' thoughts/the novel's own momentum.īecause what follows Oxen? A play devoid of narration other than stage directions, another episode where the narration and Bloom's thoughts seem to have strangely converged (or the narrator is now Bloom in disguise?), another episode where the narrator reinserts themself to a comical extreme by removing anything other than narration (and talking to themself via questions and answers) and then the ultimate surrender to Molly's raw interior monologue. You mentioned the ulyssesguide site so I'm assuming you've read the "voices in the text" section. I also think it really sets the stage for the experiments in form that follow. Like the text is being put through so much (style changes, deconstruction, etc) that it starts to come apart at the seams. But I enjoy the episode more if I think of it as a kind of preview of Finnegans Wake. Oxen services can be built on this network, such as the ability to reliably store and send private messages. I do think the term "literary masochism" is spot on. The Oxen platform offers a way to incentivise nodes to support the network, creating a private routing network for privacy-focused services, built on a foundation of blockchain nodes.
